Annual characteristics of estrous activity in wool and hair ewe lambs under subtropical conditions Scientia Agricola
Rodrigues,Paula de Almeida; Coelho,Lia de Alencar; Nonaka,Keico Okino; Sasa,Aya; Vicente,Wilter Ricardo Russiano; Balieiro,Júlio César de Carvalho; Siqueira,Edson Ramos de.
The increased emphasis placed on lamb production in Brazil points to the need for a better knowledge of the annual pattern of reproductive activity in ewe lambs. This study evaluates the annual estrous activity pattern of hair and wool ewe lambs raised in southeast Brazil. Estrous characteristics were recorded for 12 months in ten Santa Inês and 21 Romney Marsh and Suffolk ewe lambs. Santa Inês ewe lambs exhibited a greater length of the normal estrous cycle (14 to 19 days) than Romney Marsh and Suffolk ewe lambs (17.0 ± 0.1 days vs. 16.5 ± 0.2 and 15.9 ± 0.2 days). All the ewe lambs presented a greater number of periods of estrus per animal per month for single estrous cycles (up to 26 days) during autumn and winter. During spring and summer there was a...

Effect of Ethanol Extract of Whole Plant of Trichosanthes cucumerina var. cucumerina L. on Gonadotropins, Ovarian Follicular Kinetics and Estrous Cycle for Screening of Antifertility Activity in Albino Rats International Journal of Morphology
Kage,Devendra N; Malashetty,Vijaykumar B; Seetharam,Y. N; Suresh,P; Patil,Saraswati B.
Ethanol extract of whole plant of Trichosanthes cucumerina L. var. cucumerina was evaluated for antiovulatory activity in adult rats. The ethanol extract at the doses 200 and 400mg/kg body weight (orally) affected the normal estrous cycle showing a significant increase in estrus and metestrus phases and decrease in diestras and proestrus phases. The extract also significantly reduced the number of healthy follicles (Class I-Class VI) and corpora lutea and increased the number of regressing follicles (Stage IA, Stage IB, Stage IIA, and Stage IIB). The protein and glycogen content in the ovaries were significantly reduced in treated rats. The cholesterol level was significantly increased, whereas, the enzyme activities like 3b-HSD and 17b-HSD were...

Effect of urea in the diet on ovarian follicular dynamics and plasma progesterone concentration in Alpine goats R. Bras. Zootec.
Alves,Nadja Gomes; Torres,Ciro Alexandre Alves; Guimarães,José Domingos; Moraes,Elenice Andrade; Rodrigues,Marcelo Teixeira; Cecon,Paulo Roberto; Bitencourt,Luciene Lignani; Amorim,Lincoln da Silva.
To evaluate the effect of using urea in the diet on ovarian follicular dynamics and plasma urea and progesterone concentration, an experiment was carried out with 29 Alpine goats randomly distributed into four diets, each one containing 0%; 0.73%; 1.46% or 2.24% of urea on total dry matter. The follicular dynamics was monitored daily by ultrasonography. The estrous cycles were characterized by occurrence of two, three, four or five follicular waves. The emergence day of the first follicular wave in cycles with two waves, the length of the third wave and the maximum diameter of the largest follicle of the third wave in cycles with three waves presented a quadratic behavior according to the percentage of urea in the diets. In cycles with four waves, the urea...

Estrous cycle and stress: influence of progesterone on the female brain BJMBR
Lovick,T.A..
The female brain operates in a constantly changing chemical milieu caused by cyclical changes in gonadal hormones during the estrous cycle (menstrual cycle in women). Such hormones are highly lipophilic and pass readily from the plasma to the brain where they can influence neuronal function. It is becoming clear that the rapid reduction in peripheral circulating progesterone, which occurs during the late diestrous phase of the cycle, can trigger a withdrawal-like response, in which changes in GABA A receptor expression render hyper-responsive certain brain areas involved in processing responses to stressful stimuli. The periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) is recognised as an important region for integrating anxiety/defence responses. Withdrawal from...

Fecal estradiol and progesterone metabolite levels in the three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) BJMBR
Mühlbauer,M.; Duarte,D.P.F.; Gilmore,D.P.; da Costa,C.P..
The present study was carried out to assess the possibility of measuring fecal steroid hormone metabolites as a noninvasive technique for monitoring reproductive function in the three-toed sloth, Bradypus variegatus. Levels of the estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) metabolites were measured by radioimmunoassay in fecal samples collected over 12 weeks from 4 captive female B. variegatus sloths. The validation of the radioimmunoassay for evaluation of fecal steroid metabolites was carried out by collecting 10 blood samples on the same day as defecation. There was a significant direct correlation between the plasma and fecal E2 and P4 levels (P < 0.05, Pearson's test), thereby validating this noninvasive technique for the study of the estrous cycle in...

Histomorphometric and functional studies of the rat thyroid throughout the estrous cycle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Serakides,R.; Nunes,V.A; Nascimento,E.F.; Serra,G.V..
The influence of the estrous cycle on the thyroid gland was studied. Twenty one five-to-seven-month-old Wistar female rats were divided according to the stage of the estrous cycle in two groups: metaestrus-diestrus and proestrus-estrus. After gross inspection, the thyroids were weighed, sampled, and processed for staining with hematoxilyn-eosin. Seric concentrations of total T4, free T4, total T3, TSH, progesterone, and estradiol were measured. The values of estradiol were significantly higher in the proestrus-estrus stage. However, no significant differences in the plasmatic concentrations of progesterone, free T4, total T4 and TSH throughout the cycle were found. The results of the morphometric study of the thyroid did not indicate any significant...

Is the infertility in hypothyroidism mainly due to ovarian or pituitary functional changes? BJMBR
Armada-Dias,L.; Carvalho,J.J.; Breitenbach,M.M.D.; Franci,C.R.; Moura,E.G..
The objective of the present study was to examine whether hypothyroidism affects the reproductive system of adult female rats by evaluating ovarian morphology, uterus weight and the changes in serum and pituitary concentrations of prolactin and gonadotropins. Three-month-old female rats were divided into three groups: control (N = 10), hypothyroid (N = 10), treated with 0.05% 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) in drinking water for 60 days, and T4-treated group (N = 10), receiving daily sc injections of L-thyroxine (0.8 µg/100 g body weight) during the last 10 days of the experiment. At the end of 50 days of hypothyroidism no hypothyroid animal showed a regular cycle, while 71% of controls as well as the T4-treated rats showed regular cycles. Corpora lutea,...

Isolation of Candida spp from vaginal microbiota of healthy canine females during estrous cycle BJM
Cleff,Marlete Brum; Lima,Alzira Pacheco de; Faria,Renata Osório de; Meinerz,Ana Raquel Mano; Antunes,Tatiana de Ávila; Araújo,Flávia Biasoli de; Nascente,Patrícia da Silva; Nobre,Márcia de Oliveira; Meireles,Mário Carlos Araújo.
Yeasts are commensal organisms found in the skin, genital and gastrointestinal tracts, and other mucosa in mammalians. Candida spp has been frequently isolated from domestic and sylvan animals. Yeast isolation from vaginal mucus is frequent in women, especially of Candida genus. In canine females, however, studies about vaginal fungal microbiota are rare and the connection with estrous cycle is unknown. The purpose of this study was to isolate yeast 5 of Candida genus from healthy canine females and identify the isolated species, establishing their connection with estrous cycle phases. Two hundred twenty-four samples taken from vaginal mucus of 14 canine females were analyzed in this study. Candida spp was observed in 83 (37%) from these samples; nine...

Neonatal handling induces anovulatory estrous cycles in rats BJMBR
Gomes,C.M.; Frantz,P.J.; Sanvitto,G.L.; Anselmo-Franci,J.A.; Lucion,A.B..
Since previous work has shown that stimulation early in life decreases sexual receptiveness as measured by the female lordosis quotient, we suggested that neonatal handling could affect the function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis. The effects of neonatal handling on the estrous cycle and ovulation were analyzed in adult rats. Two groups of animals were studied: intact (no manipulation, N = 10) and handled (N = 11). Pups were either handled daily for 1 min during the first 10 days of life or left undisturbed. At the age of 90 days, a vaginal smear was collected daily at 9:00 a.m. and analyzed for 29 days; at 9:00 a.m. on the day of estrus, animals were anesthetized with thiopental (40 mg/kg, ip), the ovaries were removed and the oviduct was...

Reproduction and Trypanosoma congolense in Nigerian West African Dwarf ewes:I. Effects on the estrous cycle OAK
Abubakar, Y.U.; Oyedipe, E.O.; Eduvie, L.O.; Ogwu, D.O.; Adeyeye, A.A..
Ten cycling Nigerian West African Dwarf (WAD) ewes were used to determine the effect of Trypanosoma congolense infection on the estrous cycle. The estrus of ewes were synchronized using intravaginal progesterone sponges and divided into 2 groups (A and B) of 5 ewes each after 54 days (3 cycles). The ewes in group A were inoculated with blood containing approximately 5×105 trypanosomes per ml of blood while ewes in group B served as the uninfected control. All the ewes were monitored from infection till the end of the study (56 days). Ewes in the infected group had silent estrus with clinical trypanosomosis that was characterized by undulating parasitemia, intermittent pyrexia, anemia and weight loss. There was no statistical (p > 0.05) difference...

The stimulatory effect of male agouti (Dasyprocta prymnolopha) on the onset of female puberty Acta Amazonica
Guimarães,Diva Anelie de Araújo; Ramos,Rosemar Silva Luz; Garcia,Gary Wayne; Ohashi,Otávio Mitio.
The objective of this research was to analyze female agouti puberty. We did not observe the onset of puberty when the females were raised without males. When an adult male was put together with other adults and no cycling females, the onset of estrous cycle was observed after 10 to 60 days. When the young females were raised with a male, the onset of puberty was reached at 9 months. We concluded that the male agouti influences the onset of puberty in females, and that the dominant female, apparently, inhibits or delays the puberty of the other agouti females of the group. We suggest further studies be made concerning the social control of the reproduction of these animal.
